Sacramento – Today, the California Nurses Association endorsed Proposition 1, the measure to explicitly add the right to an abortion to the California State Constitution. The measure is consistent with existing state rights to privacy and equal protection and would ensure that regardless of who or what party controls the government or the courts in the future, a person’s right to an abortion is protected in California.
“As frontline health care providers, nurses understand the importance of being able to have conversations with their patients about sensitive medical decisions,” said Sandy Reding RN, President, California Nurses Association. “Proposition 1 will add the right to abortion directly into the California State Constitution and ensure that those conversations around reproductive health care – including about abortion and contraception – remain between a provider and their patient and are based on science and facts, not someone else’s political agenda. By explicitly outlining the right to an abortion in the State Constitution, we are ensuring millions will continue to have access to critical health care in California, regardless of which political party is in power or who sits on the court.”
Prop 1 will also protect how a person decides to use contraceptives and establishes guardrails that allow a person to make the choice themselves on how to use or refuse contraceptives, based on their individual needs.
